Grain-free food: what it really means

'Grain-free' describes what is absent, not what is present. A food can be grain-free and still be poor quality — or grain-inclusive and excellent.
Who benefits
Dogs and cats with a diagnosed grain or gluten sensitivity may do better without wheat, barley or rye. For most pets, grains are a fine, digestible energy source.
Look past the front of the bag
Read the first five ingredients. A named protein should lead: 'chicken', 'salmon', 'lamb'. Watch for vague terms like 'meat meal' and for fillers that replace protein with starch.
